Because we are so great and we are learning about writing reports - we decided to write a report on the Ireland match tonight.
Here it is...............
Come on the boys in green!
Tonight at 7.45pm Ireland will be playing Spain in their
Euro 2012 match. This is the killer match. Ireland really needs to get points
in order to get through their group.
The match is being played in Gdansk in Poland .
Spain
are the European champions and the World champions which means it will be an
interesting match tonight.
Robbie Keane has said
"People have probably written us off and not given us
any hope”, after their defeat against Croatia .
He also comments that "After losing the other night
it is very important that we get something out of the game.”
The fans are waiting nervously to watch the match and
hoping for a good result. The thousands of fans who have made the journey to Poland will
hope it was not in vain.
12th June
Kelly is back from her holidays!!!YAAAAY!! We missed her!
And she brought us some beautiful gifts! We love them!
We have a new friend in our class for a week or two. His name is Karl. He is going into sixth year and is sixteen years old. He is very helpful and kind and is doing all our work with us.
He used to be a student here 12 odd years ago and also made his Communion here. Everyone recognised him apart from his hair, which used to be blonde!
PHOTO STORY: We have been making our own photo story on the computer with Lorraine. We have all had a chance to say something and record it onto the pictures. We will all get a CD with this on it and add it to our scrapbook.
IRELAND: We created posters to support Ireland in the EURO 2012 soccer. We also listened to the Jedward song 'Get your green cape on' which is sung to the tune of 'Lipstick' and the official Irish song for EURO 2012 'Rocky Road to Poland'.
We were sad that Croatia bet Ireland in their first match but we have two more to go so fingers crossed!!
TROCAIRE: We got a letter from Trócaire which told us that we have not won the competition we entered!Oh mo Dhia!
But we all got badges and a certificate so we are still happy and we know that our poster was fantastic!!
6th June
We all got a huge shock this morning because....................................
CAMERON GOT HIS HAIR CUT!!!
Cameron has had long hair since he started school and now he looks sooo grown up!
We all love it!
Ruth thinks that you will start to think he looks like a handsome Prince!!!
Every cloud has a silver lining
We found out what this saying means - that if you have a problem or you make a mistake it will be ok because every cloud or bad thing has a silver lining or good side!
5th June
It was Colm's Birthday on Saturday June 2nd but we were not in school so we celebrated today (along with Abiola) and we had some yummy cake and marshmallows and cookies!
YUM YUM!!!
Colm had a great birthday and you can read about it all in his news!
We had a long weekend - both Friday and Monday off school! We are so lucky!
Last week before our long weekend, we learned lots!
MUSIC; We played a really fantastic game called 'Eurovision', where we looked at past Eurovision Irish songs such as Lipstick from Jedward, Terminal 3 by Linda Martin and Johnny Logan with Hold Me Now and we marked them out of 10.
Guess who won??? Jedward!!!!!
We also met a new friend, Ann, who helped us with our game and will be visiting more next year.
ENGLISH: We have started learning about Report writing. We read some newspaper reports and looked at the 5 W's - Who,What,When,Where,Why?
We are going to be writing our own reports and creating our own newspaper as a whole class!
MATHS: We had great fun learning about capacity* and using water to fill and empty different size containers and measure litres and mililitres.
We also had a visitor for this lesson called Paula and she loved our lesson and how hard everyone in our class works, including Teacher!!!
*this means the ability of something to hold liquid (like volume)
30th May
ENGLISH:
We read another Mystery Mates book today - The Mystery Mates and the missing millions.
It was really funny.
We acted it out as a whole class and even made all the sound like alarms and ferrets!
We wrote book reviews also and most people thought the book was funny and exciting!
SCIENCE :
Today we did a really cool experiment!
Here it is if you would like to do it too - http://www.primaryscience.ie/media/pdfs/col/design_a_boat.pdf
We were learning about how boats float!
We used water and marla to figure it out!
We discovered that it is all to do with the shape of the boat - the weight and size does not matter!
Also we learned a new word - 'upthrust' which means how the water pushes against the object - we tried it with a balloon - it was very hard - try it yourself!
We had great fun!
Check out the pictures from our experiment....
We got them to float |
uh oh - this one sank |
What is going to happen? |
This was before we made the boat shapes |
The balls of marla just sank to the bottom |
Will they float? |
Yay - we got another one to float! |
And we totally forgot to tell you about the experiment we did about airplanes!
We learned about how airplanes fly also!
It is all to do with air pressure!
Check this link out to do the experiment yourself - http://www.primaryscience.ie/media/pdfs/col/Aeroplane_Activity.pdf
Both our experiments came from the website that we love - www.primaryscience.ie - it has lots of cool ideas on it!

SPHE - We learned the importance of good and bad choices and how all our decisions have consequences. We went through some fun scenarios and thought of the possible choices and consequences.
MATHS - We are still learning more about weight. We are adding weights together and we know that there are 1000 grams in a kilogram - this is important!
HISTORY - We learned more about the Vikings! We used the bbc website which has lots of cool pictures and resources - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/vikings/ - check it out!
We drew our own Viking ships using chalk on black paper!
They turned out really cool.
Check it out!

8th - 11th May
This week we learned loads in school, we even recapped on things we already knew!
We started learning about the Vikings. We watched some Horrible Histories videos about the Vikings also.
We started learning about weight in maths! We know all about grammes and kilogrammes!
We baked some jam tarts too - 'Queen of Tarts'! It was great fun!

Cameron is making a wheelchair.
Ross is making a rocket ship.
Martin is making a camper van.
Kelly is making a tow truck.
Colm is making a train.
We must collect lots of waste materials from home to make this next Friday!
Don't worry we will put up lots of pictures of how we make it and the finished products!
Ruth helped me to introduce the Science lesson which was about movement. She did a great job.
We looked at how different things move - we used a marble and a pencil - and moved them all ways e.g. blowing, pushing, flicking and many more!
We concluded that it all depends on force and how much force is used in the movement.
There is also the Graduation Ball for the four boys who are leaving Scoil Mochua this year.
Teacher and Dee and Noeleen are going and are very excited!
4th May
Today we celebrated teacher's birthday! She will be 26 tomorrow! She is so old! Here she is looking happy!!(just kidding)

Today is Hazel's last day - we are going to miss her! She was a great help and great fun all week! :)
Music
In music yesterday we are continuing our Dublin city sounds song.
We had so much fun creating sounds from Moore Street in Dublin city centre.
We all said things like Ruth - 'roll up, roll up bunch of Parsley for a euro', Cameron 'fresh fish for a euro', Ross 'get your bananas, bunch of bananas for a euro', Teacher 'get your roses, bunch o' roses for a euro'.
We can't wait to put it all together!
Today we learned two new words - one was 'lederhosen' which is a type of trousers they wear in Austria and the other was 'acrostic' which is a type of poem!
We all wrote our own acrostic poems about our names!

Uses her musical gift and magical eyes
This girl is so friendly and kind
Has a very clever mind!
Ross is really clever
Often watches the news
Smiling all the time
Such a funny, kind boy!

Only ever helpful and friendly
Loves politics, Westlife and Fair City
Many great ideas and friends
Did you notice anything? The first letter of each line makes up our names!
Here is the poster we made from our poems.................
Art
Today we did some cool paintings where we used canvas and paint.
We were inspired by an artist called Jackson Pollock who is American and used paint dripping to create his paintings.
Here is an example of him working on one of his paintings;
Here we are working on our versions of these painting;
30th April
Today we have a new friend and S.N.A. Her name is Hazel. And she is here for one week She is from Firhouse. She is Sixteen going on Seventeen. We found out that one of the Vontrapp Children is the same age as our special guest.

We had a birthday for Liam in Eamonn's class - it was great fun!
We did some drawings and colouring today that was inspired by the artist Andy Warhol.
This is a portrait by Andy Warhol
We all really enjoyed it.
Here are our Andy Warhol inspired portraits;
But we also made our own fairy cakes!
Here is the recipe if you would like to try this at home -
115g castor sugar
2 eggs
115g butter
115g flour
and lots of strong hands for stirring!
Here are some pictures to help you out!
26 April
You will never believe what we made yesterday in school - our own Butter!!
It was actually really simple - we used the primaryscience.ie website to help us.
All we did was put some cream in a sealed glass jar and shake it like crazy for about ten minutes - and guess what? the lump of butter just forms in it and you have some liquid left too which is buttermilk.
Check out the pictures of how we got on - we even ate it after that with some crackers!!
25 April 2012
Today we sent off our entry for the Trócaire box design competition.
We are so proud of it!
Here is a picture of our poster and the one page explanation which we wrote also.
We explained;
School: Scoil Mochua Special School
Class: Unit 3
Teacher: Máire Byrne
Title: The Change is in your hands!
Our design is inspired by the 28 countries that Trócaire work in.
We know that money goes from our hand to the hands of people that Trócaire help and we wanted to show this by showing two hands in our picture. We wanted to show people that when they give money they should think about it going to people and not just the organisation. We coloured the hands in multi coloured to represent diversity and in particular the diverse nature of the 28 countries supported by Trócaire. We learned the phrase helping others to help themselves and this was reinforced when we had someone come from Trócaire on a school visit recently. This really helped inspire us further and strengthened ideas for our design. We learned so much more about Uganda and what life is like there. We know that every little helps so that is why we chose a range of coins to put on our poster. We wanted to emphasise how any money you can give helps people. We thought of the phrase ‘The Change is in your hands’ as we wanted to show people how they are responsible for changing our world. We used a play on the word ‘change’ meaning money but also meaning how you can change lives by giving your change to Trócaire and the 28 countries. We wrote 28 countries on the coins and coloured in those countries in yellow on the map to emphasise the worldwide work Trócaire does. We certainly did not know all the countries Trócaire worked in and felt others did not know either and this was an important message about Trócaire’s work which we wanted to be the main focus of our poster in order to educate people more about how widespread Trócaire is. We learned so much from creating this poster and hope others will learn from viewing it.
24 April 2012
Our Special Guest
Our guest today was a lady called Lydia from Trócaire.
She came to teach us about Daniel and the work that Trócaire do.
We came up with loads of questions to ask her before she arrived!
Colm asked;
How do they do their work in school?
We learned that they work on the floor and have no seats or tables like we do.
What kind of transport do they use?
We found out that they use a bike which they share with the whole village.
What kind of toilets do they have?
They use a hole in the ground which they dig deep and cover when full. It smells really bad!
Martin asked;
Are the schools mixed?
Yes but often it is more boys than girls because girls are expected to do the housework.
Do they get lunch in school?
No they bring their own lunch which is usually corn on the cob.
How many days a week do they go to school?
They also go five days a week same as us but spend longer there from 8am to 5pm.
What is the weather like?
It is very hot and humid, often 30C and with very little rain.
Cameron asked;
What type of food do they have?
They eat lots of potatoes but they call them 'Irish'. We are going to call them this ourselves now! They eat bananas but before they ripen and turn yellow so they are still green - it is called Matoke and it tastes like turnip.
What type of games do they play?
They play football mostly just like us.
What do they sleep on?
They sleep on mats made from the leaves of the banana tree woven together. They have no pillows so just use their arms.
Kelly asked;
What subjects do they do in school?
They do the same as us but spend a lot of time on English.
How do they celebrate Christmas ?
They go to mass or prayers with the whole village. Then they cut up a goat for Christmas day just like our big Christmas dinner.
What do their homes look like inside?
They are round and they have just one room - they eat, sleep, cook and wash all in the one room!
They have no privacy.
Ross asked;
What are their breaktimes at school?
They get one hour off during the day for lunch but with no smaller breaks. They have an hour of play at the end of the day.
Where do they get their clothes?
They do not have as many clothes as us - Daniel has two tops and a jersey that Trócaire gave him. If they need more clothes they have to travel far to a market.
What holidays do they get from school?
They get the same as us but their summer holidays are later - October/November because of planting and crop seasons.
Ruth asked;
What kind of musical instruments are there?
They play a thumb piano.
Do they wear uniforms?
Yes they do - Daniel wears a green shirt and black pants but with no shoes.
How do they bathe?
They have to go to the water well and use a bucket to wash themselves and their clothes.
Do they have TVs?
No but sometimes they will listen to the battery operated radio.
Ruth's Birthday
We had the most AMAZING day today!
It is Ruth's birthday and she had such a special day - she got 3 cards and some lovely chocolates.
We had a great party with cake and chocolate and jellies - everyone was so happy.
We all sang Happy Birthday and For She's a Jolly Good Fellow!!It was so much fun!!
We found this Happy Birthday Ruth song online.
We looked up birthday stories and jokes.
Our favourite joke was;
How does Moby Dick celebrate his birthday?
He has a WHALE of a time!!
Hope you liked that joke! :)
Ruth also designed her own cake online! Do you like it? Doesn't it look delicious?
20 April 2012
Every week we read a book together and do our book reviews.
This week we read 'Magic Mates and the Holiday of Horrors'.
Overall we liked this book about friends going on a scary holiday but it all ends up being ok!
We had great fun acting out the book where we all took on the roles of some of the characters.
Today we went out to the greenhouse and checked on the herbs that we planted before Easter.
We were sooooo surprised and happy because guess what? They had grown a little!
Check out our picture!!
19 April 2012
Some of the pupils had to go to the nursing department. Because they had to get injections. There was also a breakfast club for pyjama day. We all brought in 1euro or 2euro or more to help the Debs committee in the Senior school.
At the breakfast there were so many nice things to eat, for example sausages, eggs, rashers, beans, toast, lots of different breads and so much more.
You could also buy bread and cakes. We ate loads of food and drank some orange juice. It was all so tasty and we had great fun!
We have some visitors in our class today - another teacher is out so Abiola, Robert and John are learning with us today. They are having great fun!
We had no soccer today because of the breakfast club and we do not know yet if we will have Music with Siobhan or Ruth's piano lesson - we really hope we do but if not we will see her next week and Ruth can always sing a song she knows by heart.
18 April 2012
Today we sent an e-card to President Michael D Higgins for his birthday.
We really hope that he really likes it and replies back!
We would love if we got to visit the Aras some day.
We now know that our visitor, Lydia from Trocaire, is coming next Tuesday at 11.00. It is also going to be Ruth's birthday that day too! We are so excited about celebrating this and cannot wait to meet our visitor.
We are having a pyjama day tomorrow on Thursday April 19th - we are excited about that.
We also have a lovely writing board. What do you think of our writing?
April 2012
For the next few weeks we will be learning about the Famine in History, about Africa, in particular Uganda in Geography and we hope to have a speaker coming in from Trócaire to tell us about their work and Uganda - we are very excited about this.

They helped us use 3D shapes like cubes!
We also played a cool game on the bbc website and we learned a new word 'recruit'.
We learned how to write instructions too and we now know the features of instructions are;
-numbered steps
-tools and equipment
-diagrams/ pictures
-bossy or imperative verbs
-aim
-finished product picture
We used this powerpoint presentation to help us learn about writing instructions.
We also wrote our own set of instructions for a game we play in P.E. called Boccia.
